David Borwein Distinguished Career Award

The David Borwein Distinguished Career Award was created in 2004 to recognize individuals who have made exceptional, broad, and continued contributions to Canadian mathematics.

The first award was presented in 2006.

Nominations are currently welcomed for the 2022 David Borwein Award.

Nominations are currently closed for the 2022 David Borwein Distinguished Career Award.

Award presentation normally takes place at the CMS Winter Meeting every four years and a plenary lecture given by the recipient is customary.

Recipients

Originally, the David Borwein Distinguished Career Award was given every two years and in 2011, it was decided to award it every four years going forward.

Borwein Award Sculpture

The David Borwein Distinguished Career Award is a bronze sculpture created by artist Helaman Ferguson. The sculpture is based on Benson’s formula for Madelung’s constant for NaCl (Mathematics of Salt) and reflects David Borwein’s love and appreciation of mathematics in general and classical analysis in particular.

Selection Committee

The recipient is chosen by the Distinguished Awards Selection Committee based on the strength and merit of the nominations.

David Borwein

David Borwein served as president of the CMS from 1985-1987. He was head of the mathematics department at the University of Western Ontario from 1967 to 1989. He published over 125 papers and remained actively involved in research until his passing in 2021. His contributions to Canadian mathematics are extensive and included acting as a referee for a number of mathematical journals, serving as a reviewer for NSERC and NSF proposals, and being actively involved in the committees and programs of the Canadian Mathematical Society. He is missed by the CMS and by the Canadian mathematical community.
